What Actually Happens to Your Car After It's Scrapped

When your car leaves your driveway for the last time, its journey is far from over. Modern vehicle recycling is a surprisingly sophisticated process that recovers up to 95% of a car's materials. Here's what happens behind the scenes.

Arrival at the Authorised Treatment Facility

Your car is taken to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) — a licensed yard that meets strict environmental standards set by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). Not every scrapyard is an ATF, so it's important to use a reputable buyer who works with licensed facilities.

On arrival, the car is logged and a Certificate of Destruction is issued. This is your legal proof that the vehicle has been properly disposed of, and it releases you from any future responsibility.

Depollution

Before anything is dismantled, the car goes through depollution — the removal of all hazardous materials. This is legally required and carefully regulated.

  • All fluids are drained: engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and fuel.
  • The battery is removed and sent for specialist recycling.
  • Airbags are safely deployed or removed.
  • Air conditioning refrigerant is captured and processed.
  • The catalytic converter is removed — it contains precious metals like platinum and palladium.

Parts Salvage

Usable parts are stripped and resold. Engines, gearboxes, alternators, starter motors, body panels, lights, and mirrors all have a second life in the used parts market. This is a significant part of a car's residual value and one reason salvage buyers often pay more than pure scrap weight.

Even seemingly minor components — door handles, window regulators, interior trim — have demand. The used car parts market in the UK is worth over £1 billion annually.

Shredding and Material Recovery

What's left after depollution and parts salvage goes into an industrial shredder. The car is reduced to fist-sized chunks of mixed material in seconds.

Magnets separate the ferrous metals (steel and iron). Eddy current separators pull out non-ferrous metals like aluminium and copper. The remaining mix — plastics, rubber, glass, fabric — is sorted further using density separation and hand-picking.

The recovered steel is melted down and reused in new products. A typical car yields around 800 kg of recyclable steel — enough to make several hundred tin cans or a portion of a new car's body shell.
